Lose Weight the Healthy Way!

Do you want to eat healthy but don’t know where to start?

You are not alone! Many Australian’s are in the same position as you. It’s great that the nutritional content must be displayed but unfortunately it is often still to hard to understand it!

If you really want to eat healthy the best thing to do is make an appointment with a nutritionist because they can work out an eating plan that suits your body and your goals. However, here are a few tips to help to get started. Often making small changes to your diet can make a big difference to how you feel and look!

1. Beware of ‘low-fat’ but ‘high sugar’. Often foods say low-fat but then a lot of sugar is added to them. If your body doesn’t use the sugar for energy then it is going to be stored as fat any way. Stick to low-fat options where possible but make sure that they haven’t just taken the fat out and added more sugar!

2. Eat more protein! Protein is great for repairing muscles and also keeps you fuller for longer. Try adding low-fat natural yogurt to your breakfast and enjoying an afternoon snack of a small handful of (unsalted) nuts and a banana.

3. Swap white for wholemeal or whole grain. unfortunately the process to make bread white causes a lot of the nutritional content to be lost. Wholemeal and whole grain bread contains more vitamins, minerals and fibre. It also has a lower glycemic index which means you will be fuller for longer.

4. Sugar is still sugar. Just because juice is made from fruit doesn’t mean you can drink litres of it! Fructose is the sugar that come from fruit. This is better than glucose, but at the end of the day it is still sugar. And as mentioned, if you don’t use it for energy then it will be stored in the body as fat.

5. Eat more raw food. During the colder months we tend to eat more cooked vegetables and less fresh salads. The process of cooking vegetables takes out a lot of the important vitamins and minerals so it is better to slightly cook them as a pose to overcooking. Try to have one serve of raw and one serve of slightly cooked vegetables each day.

It’s great that you want to be healthier and your diet is a good place to start. Remember, ‘You Are What You Eat!’

  1. Some great tips, what you eat is just as important if not more so than how much time you spend at the gym!
