Aspartame (in diet soft drinks) could be killing you!

Aspartame (in diet soft drinks) could be killing you!
Above is an article written about the dangers of aspartame and phenylalanine. These are the technical names for brands of artificial sweeteners such as equal, NutraSweet and so on. It is also found in high levels in diet soft drink and chewing gum and in some foods.
The article goes into detail about the history and origins of aspartame and then into more depth about what the substance does to the body. However I will try to summarise the article as well as possible but strongly recommend that you read the whole article.
Aspartame was found by accident in 1965 while testing for an anti ulcer drug. In 1981 it was approved for dry goods and in 1983 was approved for carbonated beverages. Since it has been approved the FDA has reported that 75 percent of adverse reactions to food additives are from aspartame. Aspartame has many side effects (headaches, seizures, weight gain, hearing loss, vertigo, memory loss and the list goes on.)
However studies are now showing that chronic illness such as brain tumours, epilepsy, chronic fatigue, Parkinson’s, birth defects and so on can cause or worse by ingesting aspartame.
The reason why Aspartame is so dangerous is the properties in aspartame (aspartame and glutamate) act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmission of information from neuron to neuron. Too much will kill certain neurons as the body releases a large amount of free radicals to protect itself but will damage or kill the neurons (cells).
So aspartame is especially dangerous for children or the elderly as there isn’t as much protection at the blood brain barrier to stop the aspartame getting into the brain.
So in a basic summary for overall health and well being do not drink aspartame! Avoid any food/drinks that contain it as it is a deadly poison but also it has also been shown to have effects on weight loss and people retaining weight. So please read the article in depth and learn more about the dangers of aspartame.

This screams “bad science” to me by a guy who seems to be pushing alarmist stories to publicise his own products. Aspartame has been studied extensively, and a review in 2002 published in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, Volume 35, Issue 2, Supplement 1, April 2002, Pages S1-S93 ( concluded:

“The extensive research done with aspartame overwhelmingly demonstrates its safety. In addition, aspartame has been consumed by hundreds of millions of people around the world over the past 20 years, representing billions of man-years of safe exposure. Nonetheless, the safety of aspartame continues to be challenged by individuals who either ignore the data or are not familiar with the totality of the data. The allegations raised regarding aspartame by a few individuals have not been based on controlled scientific studies. Rather, they have been largely based on anecdote, personal opinion, conjecture and hypothesis. Further, the few studies suggestive of an apparent effect of aspartame are not reproducible by others, are done with dosage routes of administration (e.g., ip or in vitro) not relevant to aspartame consumption, or are so flawed from a methodological or statistical standpoint that valid conclusions cannot be drawn.

The scientific evaluation of aspartame’s safety has extended well beyond standard safety testing for food additives. When the safety data for aspartame are evaluated as a whole, the weight of scientific evidence is clear that aspartame is safe for its intended uses, and there are no unresolved questions regarding its safety.”

Dr Mercola seems to be a bit of a quack. He pushes homeopathy for crying out loud! [If you don’t know why homepathy is a load of bull dust, read ‘Bad Science’ by Ben Goldacre.]
